From Molecules to Organisms: Towards Multiscale Integrated Models of Biological Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
A consensus has recently emerged that further progress in understanding human physiopathology will demand integrative views of biological systems. In this context, complex systems and related interdisciplinary approaches of biology are expected to help. The aim of this collective paper is basically to provide a starting point for further discussions and interactions within the community of complex systems biologists. After briefl y introducing some general concepts, we present four major challenges that should be tackled in the next years. These represent future directions that we isolated as priority concerns for modern biology. Suggestions of how to reach these destinations are provided, with the hope that they will soon lead to concrete advances towards fully consistent multiscale models of biological systems and a better understanding of physiopathology.

Number Crunching towards Molecular Barcoding
Molecules are the basic and most important players of life. Molecules are composed of atoms, and each molecule has two main specifications or inheritances that are structures, and in biomedical applications, biological function. This dichotomy can be compared to living organisms or humans whom possess genotype and phenotype. Each of the two main inherited elements contains a variety of feat...
متن کاملMultiscale models for biological systems
a r t i c l e i n f o Life, amazingly rich in diversity of shapes and functions, explores the limits of extreme complexity in nature. In this review we shall discuss in general terms the use of multiscale mathematical and computer models to study the dynamics of biological systems. These models permit integration of the rapidly expanding knowledge concerning the molecular basis of biology and i...
متن کاملStochastic simulation of gene expression: From individual to interacting cells PhD project in Computational Systems Biology
The purpose of systems biology is to understand the biological phenomena that we observe on a cellular, tissue and organism level, through an understanding of the molecular interactions that occur inside individual cells. In contrast to many other biological fields, systems biology has embraced mathematical modeling and simulation as a major tool to achieve those goals. With algorithms and soft...
متن کاملCorrelating Multiscale Measurements of Nanoparticles in Primary Cells
Nanoparticles are emerging as invaluable tools in disease diagnosis, disease treatment and imaging contrast enhancement agents [1]. The interactions of nanoparticles with host organisms are complex and affect biological systems over length scales that vary from the size of molecules to that of full organisms. In order to understand these interactions between nanoparticles and organisms, a varie...
متن کاملMultiscale Filtering and Applications to Chemical and Biological Systems
Measured process data are a valuable source of information about the processes they are collected from. Unfortunately, measurements are usually contaminated with errors that mask the important features in the data and degrade the quality of any related operation. Wavelet-based multiscale filtering is known to provide effective noise-feature separation. Here, the effectiveness of multiscale filt...
